The ChatGPT Buyer Journey vs the Google Buyer Journey

In Google, the buyer builds a shortlist by clicking through results. In ChatGPT, the shortlist is handed to them inside the answer, and the click that follows is usually a Google search for the recommended brand, not a visit to your site. That inversion changes what to measure, where to invest and why referral traffic understates the channel's value.

A Google buyer searches, scans ten blue links, opens three tabs and assembles a shortlist by reading. A ChatGPT buyer asks one question and receives the shortlist already assembled, with a recommendation attached. The work Google left to the buyer is now done by the model before any click. That single inversion explains why ChatGPT referral traffic looks tiny, why brand search is the real signal, and why position inside the answer matters more than any landing page.

Two journeys side by side

Stage Google journey ChatGPT journey
Query Short keyword fragment Full question with context and constraints
Discovery Ten links, ads above, buyer clicks several Three to seven brands named in one answer
Shortlist Built by the buyer over several sessions Handed to the buyer by the model
Evaluation On vendor sites, review sites, comparison pages Follow-up questions in the same chat
Verification Already done during discovery A Google search for the recommended brand
Click to vendor Common, early Rare, late, often direct or via Google
Measurable footprint Organic sessions, rankings Mention rate, brand search lift, small referral

How many buyers are actually on the ChatGPT journey

The behavior is no longer niche. ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly users as of February 2026. That is an aggregate figure; the purchase-specific numbers are more striking.

A 2026 Exploding Topics and Semrush survey of 1,009 US consumers found that 77.6% had used AI for shopping or purchase decisions in the past six months, 43.2% did so weekly, and 68.6% said AI directly influenced a purchase. Among those AI shoppers, 77.6% used ChatGPT, with Gemini at 58.2%. For a marketing director, the implication is that a meaningful share of your buyers now meet your category first in a chat window, where the shortlist is decided before your site is ever loaded.

Why the click disappears

In Google, the click is the mechanism of discovery; you cannot evaluate a vendor without visiting something. In ChatGPT, the answer is the evaluation. The model names the options, describes each, compares them on the buyer’s stated constraints and often picks one. Follow-up questions (“which is cheapest,” “which integrates with HubSpot”) happen in the same chat. This is zero-click by design, not by accident.

The result shows up in traffic data. SE Ranking’s June 2026 study of 101,574 sites found AI platforms accounted for 0.32% of all website traffic in 2026, against 42.75% for organic search, even though AI referrals had grown 16x since 2024 and ChatGPT alone held 74.78% of them. Anyone judging the channel by referral sessions will conclude it is irrelevant. That conclusion misreads where the value sits.

Where the buyer goes after the answer

The ChatGPT buyer does click, just not on you, and not in ChatGPT. A 2026 Idea Grove survey of 1,000 US consumers found that only 2% would buy from an unfamiliar brand on an AI recommendation alone, 45% immediately Google the brand, and 18% go to review sites. In the same survey, 78% said reviews raised their trust, 71% relied on Google rankings and 58% on press coverage.

So the sequence is: ChatGPT names you, the buyer searches your brand in Google, reads your reviews, perhaps checks a press mention, then arrives at your site as a branded or direct visit. Your analytics records a brand search conversion. The recommendation that started it is invisible in attribution unless you look for it deliberately. How to set that tracking up, including the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter on the clicks that do happen, is in tracking ChatGPT traffic in GA4.

Why position matters more here than in Google

In Google, a buyer who scrolls to result six still sees it with the same visual weight as result one, and may click it if the title fits. In ChatGPT, the sixth brand gets a clause and a qualifier, while the first gets a paragraph and the closing recommendation. The buyer then verifies one or two names, not six.

Illustration: suppose a cluster of 30 buyer prompts where your brand is mentioned in 60% of answers but averages position 4.5. In Google terms that would be a respectable page-one presence. In ChatGPT terms it means many of the buyers who see your name do not carry it to the verification step. The mechanics are in why position 1 to 3 in a ChatGPT answer is the whole game.

The verification step is where Google still decides

The ChatGPT journey does not replace Google; it reorders it. Google moves from discovery to verification. That has a practical consequence many teams miss: being recommended by ChatGPT is wasted if the Google brand search that follows shows thin reviews, an outdated knowledge panel, a competitor’s ad above your result, or a forum thread questioning your legitimacy.

The verification experience is largely under your control. Own your branded results, keep reviews current and concentrated where your category compares, make sure your knowledge panel and LinkedIn page say what your site says, and have a clear page answering “is [Brand] legit.” This is where GEO and SEO overlap: AI visibility creates the demand, and classic brand SEO catches it.

What the ChatGPT journey means for measurement

The Google journey gave marketers rankings, impressions, clicks and conversions in one tool. The ChatGPT journey splits the signal across three places, and a sensible dashboard tracks all three:

  • Presence in the answer: mention rate, position and share of voice across a prompt cluster, measured from many real answers, not one.
  • Brand search lift: branded impressions and clicks in Search Console, which should rise a few weeks after presence rises.
  • Direct referrals: sessions carrying utm_source=chatgpt.com in GA4, the smallest of the three.

Presence leads, brand search follows, referrals trail. If presence rises and brand search does not, check your entity and the verification experience; the buyer may be getting your name and failing to find you. How to build the presence measurement is in how mention rate and position are measured properly.

The two routes inside ChatGPT change the journey too

Not every ChatGPT answer is built the same way. Some come from the model’s training data; others are grounded in a live web search and show sources. Searched answers include citation links, which gives the buyer a possible click path to a third-party page about you, and occasionally to you. Memory-based answers have no links at all, and the journey goes straight to Google. The distinction, and what each route rewards, is explained in ChatGPT Search vs model knowledge.

How the two journeys feel from the buyer’s side

Consider a founder choosing an outsourced accounting firm. On the Google journey she searches “outsourced accounting for startups,” opens four firm sites and two “top 10” listicles, compares pricing pages, and after an hour has a shortlist of three. Each firm saw her as an organic session and maybe a pricing-page view.

On the ChatGPT journey she types “I run a 12-person seed-stage SaaS company in Denver, which outsourced accounting firms should I talk to and why?” She gets four names with reasons, asks two follow-ups about pricing and startup experience, and ends with two names. She then Googles both, reads their reviews, and books a call with one. The firm that won saw a branded search and a direct booking. The three firms not named never knew she existed, and the firm named fourth was never Googled at all.

Same buyer, same budget, same decision. The difference is who did the shortlisting and where the evidence of it landed.

What this means for where to invest

The Google journey rewarded landing pages, keyword coverage and backlinks. The ChatGPT journey rewards being the name the model produces for the buyer’s exact question, then surviving verification. In practice that means consistent entity descriptions, earned coverage in the places buyers compare, concentrated review signals, plain facts on your site, and a clean branded Google result.

The channel is small in sessions and large in who those sessions are: buyers who arrive pre-shortlisted, often ready to compare two names rather than twelve. To find out whether yours is one of the names, get a baseline of what ChatGPT says about your brand.

What to do next

  • Run your top ten buyer prompts in ChatGPT and record whether you are named and in what position.
  • Search your own brand in Google and audit what a verifying buyer sees: reviews, knowledge panel, first-page results.
  • Add branded search impressions and utm_source=chatgpt.com sessions to your monthly reporting next to mention rate.

Frequently asked questions

Do people actually use ChatGPT to make buying decisions?

Yes, at scale. A 2026 Exploding Topics and Semrush survey of 1,009 US consumers found 77.6% had used AI for shopping or purchase decisions in the past six months, 43.2% weekly, and 68.6% said AI directly influenced a purchase. Among AI shoppers, 77.6% used ChatGPT. The behavior is mainstream, even if the referral traffic it leaves behind is still small.

Why is ChatGPT referral traffic so low if so many people use it?

Because the recommendation rarely ends in a click to your site. A 2026 Idea Grove survey found 45% of consumers immediately Google a brand recommended by AI and 18% go to review sites. The AI answer creates the shortlist; the visit arrives later through brand search or direct. SE Ranking's 2026 study put AI platforms at 0.32% of all website traffic against 42.75% for organic search.

What is zero-click in the context of ChatGPT?

Zero-click means the buyer gets what they need without clicking a link. In ChatGPT most answers are zero-click by design: the brands, the comparison and the recommendation are all in the response. The commercial value is in being named well, not in the click, and the measurable downstream effect is usually a rise in branded Google searches rather than referral sessions.

Should I shift budget from SEO to ChatGPT visibility?

Not shift; sequence. Google still delivers the verification step that AI recommendations trigger, so a brand that is recommended by ChatGPT but weak in Google brand search and reviews loses the buyer at verification. Fund the Google basics for your brand name and reviews first, then invest in being the recommended name. The two channels feed each other.

How do I measure ChatGPT's effect if buyers don't click?

Track three things together: your mention rate and position across a prompt cluster, branded search volume in Google Search Console, and referral sessions with utm_source=chatgpt.com in GA4. Movement in the first tends to be followed by movement in the second within weeks, in our experience. Referral sessions are the smallest and least important of the three.
