The acronyms describe three different outputs, not three flavors of the same thing. SEO gets a URL ranked in a list. Answer engine optimization gets a short factual answer pulled from your page and displayed. Generative engine optimization gets your brand named, and ideally named first, inside a recommendation that an AI model composes.
The direct answer: three outputs, three metrics
In SEO, the buyer sees a results page and chooses a link. Success is a high rank and a click.
In AEO, the buyer sees an answer box, hears a voice assistant reply, or reads an AI Overview, and the question is settled on the spot. Success is your page being the source that gets quoted, which may or may not produce a click.
In GEO, the buyer asks “which should I use?” and sees three to six brands with reasoning. Success is being one of those brands, in a top-three position, across most of the ways the question can be phrased. A click is a bonus; the recommendation is the product.
The same page can be a success in one and irrelevant in the other two. A pricing page that ranks first on Google (SEO win) and is quoted in an AI Overview for “how much does X cost” (AEO win) does nothing to make ChatGPT recommend your brand when a buyer asks for the best option in your category. That recommendation is assembled mostly from what other sources say about you. In a 2026 University of Toronto audit covered in a roundup of six studies on how AI engines cite the web, earned media made up 57% of GPT-4o’s citations, and the overlap between cited sources and Google’s top ten was just 4.0% for GPT-4o.
GEO vs AEO vs SEO: the table
| Dimension | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buyer’s question | “Where do I find this?” | “What is the answer?” | “Which one should I choose?” |
| Surface | Google results page | Featured snippet, voice reply, AI Overview | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot answers |
| Unit optimized | A URL | A passage on a page | A brand entity |
| What success looks like | Top-three rank, click | Your page quoted as the answer | Brand named in the top three of the answer |
| Main metric | Rankings, clicks | Snippet or Overview ownership | Mention rate, position, citation rate |
| Content that matters most | Your own pages | Your own pages, written to be quotable | Third-party coverage plus consistent facts about you |
| Typical competitive field | Ten organic slots plus features | One answer slot | Three to six names |
| Volatility | Low to moderate | Moderate | High: 40 to 60% of cited sources rotate monthly |
| Time to first movement | Months for competitive terms | Weeks if the page already ranks | Weeks when signals exist; our service targets first movement within the first week |
The volatility row needs a word of caution. The Digital Authority Partners study tracked 1,127 cited URLs between November 2025 and February 2026 and found only 10.6% persisted across 28 days. That is why GEO cannot be measured with a single check. You need many sampled answers per prompt to know your real mention rate, a point we expand on in how to measure your brand’s visibility in ChatGPT.
Where SEO wins, in brief
SEO is the volume channel and the verification channel. Organic search drives 42.75% of website traffic in 2026 per SE Ranking’s study of more than 100,000 sites, against 0.32% for all AI platforms combined, and a 2026 Idea Grove survey found 45% of consumers immediately Google a brand an AI recommends. Your branded results page is therefore the landing experience for both AEO and GEO. The full two-way case for SEO, including when it should get the next dollar, is in GEO vs SEO; this page concentrates on where AEO sits between them.
Where GEO wins, in brief
GEO wins on the consideration question (“which one should I choose?”) in categories where buyers ask a chatbot before they search, and it wins where the competitive field is small: a ChatGPT answer names three to six brands, so absence is invisibility and fourth place often comes with a caveat attached. An Exploding Topics and Semrush survey found 77.6% of US consumers had used AI for shopping or purchase decisions in the past six months. The detailed argument, the metrics and the funding rule are in GEO vs SEO and the position article.
What AEO actually optimizes: the quotable passage
AEO is the discipline most often confused with GEO, so it deserves the most space here. Its unit of work is not a URL and not a brand; it is a passage. An answer engine (Google’s featured snippet, an AI Overview, a voice assistant, Bing’s Copilot answer box) takes a question with a reasonably settled answer and extracts the clearest, most self-contained statement of it from a page it already trusts.
That means AEO rewards a specific editorial shape:
- A question-shaped heading followed immediately by a direct answer of one to three sentences, before any context or caveats.
- Consistent terminology, so the extractor can match the question’s words to the passage’s words.
- Lists and tables for questions whose answer is a set of steps or options, because extractors reproduce those structures well.
- Structured data where it applies (FAQ, HowTo, product and organization markup), which helps the engine confirm what the passage is.
- A page that already ranks on page one for the question, because answer engines overwhelmingly draw from pages they already rate highly.
The last point is the one most AEO advice skips. A quotable passage on a page that does not rank is rarely quoted. AEO is therefore a layer on top of working SEO, not a replacement for it.
The three AEO surfaces, and how each behaves
| Surface | Where it appears | What it extracts | What changes when you win it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Featured snippet | Above the organic results on Google | A paragraph, list or table from one page | Your page becomes “position zero”; the click often still happens for how-to questions |
| AI Overview | At the top of Google results for many informational queries | A synthesized answer citing several pages | You are one of several cited sources; the click is less likely than with a snippet |
| Voice assistant | Spoken reply with no screen or a small one | A single short passage, usually from a snippet-eligible page | No click at all; the value is authority and brand mention by name |
The common thread is that the buyer’s question is settled on the spot. Success is your page being the source, which may or may not produce a visit. That makes AEO a channel to measure in snippet or Overview ownership and in branded search, not in clicks alone.
Why an AEO win is not a GEO win
Here is the gap that causes most of the confusion. An AI Overview can quote your explainer on “what to look for in a payroll provider” while ChatGPT, asked “which payroll provider should a 50-person company use”, names three competitors and not you. Both are AI-generated answers. Only one of them is a recommendation.
The reason is where each answer comes from. The AEO surface is extracting from your page, so your page’s quality and structure decide the outcome. The GEO recommendation is assembled mostly from what other sources say about you, which is why the Toronto audit found earned media at 57% of GPT-4o citations and only a 4.0% overlap with Google’s top ten. You can be the best-quoted source in your category and still not be the recommended brand. The distinction is the subject of mentions vs citations in ChatGPT.
The reverse is also true. A brand that ChatGPT names consistently may have no featured snippets at all, because its visibility rests on how trade press, review sites and comparison articles describe it rather than on its own informational pages.
When AEO should get the next dollar
AEO is the cheapest of the three to start, because it is mostly editorial discipline on pages you already have. Fund it when:
- You already rank on page one for informational queries and want to own the answer slot above the links.
- Voice and AI Overviews are visibly eating your informational clicks and you would rather be the quoted source than an unlisted competitor.
- Your category has many factual questions with settled answers (rates, timelines, specifications, definitions) that buyers ask during evaluation.
Do not fund AEO expecting it to fix a GEO gap. If competitors are named in ChatGPT recommendations and you are not, better snippets on your own site will not change that; the levers are in the GEO guide.
When to combine them
In practice the three form a sequence that follows the buyer.
Suppose a buyer asks ChatGPT, “What are the best project management tools for a construction company?” ChatGPT names four tools (GEO decides whether you are one). The buyer then Googles two of them (SEO decides what they see on your branded page). While comparing, they ask “does [tool] integrate with [accounting software]?” and an AI Overview quotes the clearest page (AEO decides whose page that is). The same buyer passes through all three disciplines in ten minutes.
The overlap in work is real:
- Consistent entity facts about your brand help all three; see brand entity consistency for LLMs.
- Quotable, structured pages help AEO directly and GEO indirectly, because models that retrieve your page can describe you accurately.
- Earned media helps GEO heavily, SEO moderately through branded search and links, and AEO barely.
- Technical SEO is the floor for all three; a page that cannot be crawled cannot be quoted or retrieved.
The differences in measurement matter as much as the overlaps. If you report GEO in clicks, it will look like a failure even when it is working, because the recommendation usually converts into a branded Google search rather than a direct visit. Track mention rate, position and branded search volume together, and read how to track ChatGPT traffic and leads for the GA4 setup.
Which to fund first: a decision rule
Three questions, asked in order.
Does your branded Google results page hold up? If not, fix it first. Every GEO and AEO outcome routes through it.
Where do your buyers ask their consideration question? Ask ChatGPT ten buyer prompts for your category (the free prompt generator will build them). If competitors appear and you do not, GEO is the gap, and you can check what ChatGPT currently says about your brand across a full cluster to size it.
Is your SEO still growing? If organic traffic has plateaued, the marginal SEO dollar buys less than it used to. Move it to GEO if the consideration gap exists, or to AEO if your informational pages already rank and are losing clicks to answer boxes.
The rule compressed: fix branded search, then fund the discipline that matches the question your buyers ask and where you are currently absent.
What to do next
- Write down, for your top ten buyer questions, whether each is a “where”, “what” or “which” question. The split tells you which discipline each one belongs to.
- Read GEO vs SEO for the two-way comparison in more depth, then the full GEO guide.
- If the “which” questions are the ones you are losing, get a measured baseline of your mention rate before deciding how much to fund.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to have your content selected as the direct answer to a factual question, in a featured snippet, a voice assistant reply or an AI Overview. GEO (generative engine optimization) aims to have your brand named and ranked well inside a generated recommendation such as a ChatGPT answer to "best X for Y". AEO is about your page being the answer; GEO is about your brand being the recommendation.
Is AEO the same as optimizing for AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are one AEO surface, alongside featured snippets and voice answers. All of them extract a concise answer from a source. Optimizing for them means making a page the clearest, most quotable answer to a specific question. It is related to GEO but not the same, because an AI Overview summarizing your article does not mean ChatGPT will name your brand when a buyer asks for recommendations.
Do I need separate teams for GEO, AEO and SEO?
Usually not separate teams, but separate goals and metrics. The same content and PR people can serve all three if they know which output each task is for. The mistake is measuring everything in rankings and clicks, which makes GEO look like it is failing when it is actually working, because most ChatGPT recommendations convert into a branded Google search rather than a click.
Which acronym will win, GEO or AEO?
Both terms are in use and describe different outputs, so neither is likely to disappear soon. What matters for budgeting is the behavior behind them: factual lookups (AEO), ranked lists of links (SEO) and conversational recommendations (GEO). Pick your terminology, define the metric for each, and stop arguing about the label.
Which of the three should a small company fund first?
Fix branded search first, since 45% of consumers Google a brand after an AI recommends it. Then fund the channel where your buyers ask their consideration question and where you are currently absent. For most B2B and considered-purchase categories that is GEO; for high-volume informational categories it is SEO with AEO layered on top of the pages that already rank.
